Walk With Your Head Down

The next time you see someone pointing their Smartphone at
you, think twice. They could be using a new app called Viewdle which uses
facial recognition software to link your face with your social media pages
(like Facebook and LinkedIn). At first glance it seems like an amazing idea.
Why would you want to waste time tagging all those pictures you took during spring
break if an app could do it for you? But, think about all the creeps out there.
While walking innocently through the mall someone snaps a shot of you and now
they know your name and have access to all of your sites linked with your
photos. I’m all for new technology but it even alarms me from time to time. As
the internet grows our privacy lessens. Who will regulate and enforce privacy
rules, the government? Another question is how do we protect ourselves from
people we don’t want to know our information? For now what I can suggest is to
keep tight eye on your privacy settings on all accounts (e-mail, social media,
etc) and to walk with your head down or with a nice pair of un recognizable shades.

pleaseeee be safe and smart

  1. I totally agree Erica. Technology is amazing but something that also amazes me is just how much our privacy is becoming an issue. Facebook is an amazing tool when used properly, but when some random guy is looking at all your information and pictures for all the wrong reasons this is a cause for concern. I myself have strict control over who may see my facebook page and also have a little information about my private life as possible because you never know who's really watching. It's interesting to ask if the government would be the ones that would enforce correct use, when it could very well be them who use it to invade our privacy. I think the best thing we can do is be smart about the information we share and how accessible we want to make it. I guess there's always the choice of getting nicer shoes so you can have something to look at when you're looking down or splurge on some nice shades, either way it's just the beginning.

  2. Again. ANYONE who has a Facebook page or any social network should never complain about privacy. I agree we do have to read the fine print when we become members of these social networks because we don't. I know I didn't. We have to double check those privacy settings because we don't want to let those in who we don't know.

  3. I agree that Technology is amazing, and i understand the worries that tech can cause . however we have to be smart on what WE put in facebook and other social media platforms. WE decide what info we put up at these sites. Dont be silly and put important info or personnel pics.

  4. Erica,
I completely agree. It does seem like a fascinating idea until you think of the idea of strangers having access to the social networks you are connected to. At least with these sites you can control who you want to have access to your information, photos etc... I feel like there is a lack of control and regulation needs to be implemented. It is a good idea in some respects but privacy needs to be more completely thought through.

  5. Technology can be used, or abused. How do you control which people will choose to do with it?

I think we as individuals have to decide how much we want to expose our lives via media (social and traditional) and understand the risks. Just as we have to evaluate the benefits of a CAT scan to identify a health condition vs the risk of radiation exposure.

    Life is full of choices.
